We finally decide to call home a rural community in Southern Portugal's Lower Alentejo. 20 miles before the southernmost Algarve region starts the Alentejo sits it's dazzlingly vast expanses relieved by gentle hills highlighted by white towns and isolated farmhouses. With a sparse population living within an enticing landscape that since pre Roman times has changed little, the Alentejo retains a simple charm. Nature here is pure, people's love for the land a source of inspiration..

My wife and I, between many shuttle trips between our work in Japan, visits to relatives scattered around the world and this farmhouse 'Montecharola', with its 6 acres of land, we bought 7 years ago, are now ready to make the change...

We're the the first non-portuguese to inhabit the thick rock walls, the rustic simplicity of traditional details of our home. Aware of a sense of indebtness to the past unknown craftsmen that laboured here , we have strived to translate in a congenial way our need for comfort while restoring Montecharola . We love the way all similar "montes" look like they've got that right of belonging just as naturally as the sorrounding cystus scrub, the stands of gigantic cork oaks, the pastoral scenery...

ACCOMODATIONS: One twin-bedrooom and one double-bedroom with ensuite. Chance to try olive picking in own grove and soap making. Breakfast. Exclusive booking (sleeps 4-6) on weekly basis.
